Happy Friday, and welcome to the first Fresh Idea Friday post! Now, the following information isn’t new knowledge in any way…but…the idea that we can change how we feel everyday, and even our general health, with a few simple changes to our daily routine, is indeed, fresh, to a lot of people!
I have a desk job. For 8 hours, 5 days per week, I sit on my tush and either type, read or talk on the phone. It’s a fact of my life, but doesn’t have to control my life or health. Read below to see what many of us are up against…and then at the end of the post I’ll share some of the things I do, or am going to do, to alleviate the consequences of the desk job.
Crazy right?! Not only are most of us eating foods, everyday, that we were never meant to metabolize, we’re sitting more than we ever have … no wonder America’s annual health care bill is so gigantic, and no wonder why so many of us deal with chronic health issues.
The Center for Disease Control estimates that 50% of Americans suffer from some type of chronic disease, and that these diseases, which include heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes and arthritis, are the most common, costly and preventable health care issues in America. Anyway, the food side of this is a different post, but as far as the tush-sitting, here are 4 fresh tips I use everyday, and one I plan on trying.
- Set an alarm to beep every 30-60 minutes. This reminds me to stand up and walk around the building.
- Stand up on cue. Every time my phone rings, I stand up to talk. I often have to sit back down to jump on the computer for a customer, but the simple act of standing up makes me feel better.
- Drink a ton of water. I drink water. All. Day. Long. Usually between 1 – 2 liters during the workday. Obviously, this is good for my body, but, it also ensures that I’m up and walking…to the restroom…frequently.
- Sun Salutations. While they are much more difficult in heels and dress clothes, I try to get in at least 3 Sun Salutations, twice a day. Even if you need to bring a yoga mat (or large towel) so you can do this in the bathroom…it’s so worth it!
Here is a super simple Salutation. I hold each pose for 2-3 breaths and go through the salutation 3 times. It takes about 5 minutes. It does wonders for my back/neck/shoulder stiffness and really gets my blood moving. A perfect pick-me-up!
I’m also thinking about renovating my work area to be a standing work station. I’ve read that this does wonders for low back pain, alignment and stamina…and can even prevent chronic neck and shoulder pain, which I definitely have. I’m still a little nervous…but, I can always change it back, right?
How much of your day is spent sitting? Do you do anything to alleviate tush-time?
Happy Friday…have an amazing weekend!
